It’s the time of year when Formosan subterranean termites swarm and spread their colonies. Termite swarms can occur throughout the year but most commonly occur when the weather is warmer. This swarm season starts as early as April and lasts through June, with a peak in early to mid-May.
Termite swarms can be a nuisance, especially when they fly in large numbers. Termite swarms outside of your home are not necessarily a cause for concern. And killing swarmers around the house does not provide your home any protection from termite infestation and damage.
If you see termite swarms outside of your home and do not have a termite protection contract, you should consider having your home inspected by a professional termite control company, followed by proper treatment depending on the situation.
Termite swarms located inside of a home can be a sign that it’s already infested with termites. Formosan subterranean termites have the ability to cause thousands of dollars in damage in just a few months. We handled a case in which the only visible evidence of termite damage inside of the home was a small hole in the sheetrock located below a window and a small soft spot in the floor of a bedroom. We ultimately discovered that the home had suffered so much damage that it could not be repaired. Not surprisingly, the termite company involved in this case agreed to pay a substantial amount to settle.
If you see swarms inside of your home, you should immediately notify the company which has the termite protection contract on your home. Once they respond, give us a call to discuss whether the company has taken the necessary steps to protect your home and whether you have any cause for additional concern.
If you have any questions, give us a call, and let us put our experience to work for you.
